Why Pass the Medicare Modernization Act (MMA) of 2003?

  1. Move more Medicare beneficiaries into private health plans.

  1. Build private sector infrastructure to prepare for influx of baby boom population into Medicare.   (1/3 of all Americans were born between 1945 and 1964).

  1. Provide prescription drug coverage (Effective January 1, 2006)

  1. Address the needs of specific populations.  (Rural beneficiaries need additional choices - 24% of Medicare Beneficiaries live in rural counties).

How does Medicare Modernization Act (MMA) impact our Senior Citizens?

  1. All Medicare beneficiaries can have drug coverage.

·         But they have to opt-in or select a plan

·         No decision is a decision

  1. There are many new choices in health plans.

All seniors need to evaluate their coverage including those with Original Medicare and Medicare Supplement.

  1. Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will aggressively inform the public of these new benefits.  (This could cause confusion and questions).
